Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It occurs in nearly all living cells, with highest concentrations in liver, kidney, and red blood cells, and exists in reduced (GSH) and oxidized disulfide (GSSG) forms. The cysteine thiol group enables reversible oxidation and reduction reactions. This property makes glutathione a central participant in cellular redox balance. The balance between these forms is often used as an indicator of oxidative stress.
Glutathione synthesis proceeds in two ATP-dependent steps catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase and glutathione synthetase. The first step joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine and is generally rate-limiting. The second step adds glycine to complete the tripeptide. Cysteine availability, feedback inhibition by glutathione, and oxidative conditions influence flux through this pathway. The pathway is conserved across many organisms, and degradation by gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and related peptidases recycles amino acids for new synthesis.
Biosynthesis proceeds in two ATP-dependent steps. First, glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine. Second, glutathione synthetase adds glycine to the intermediate. The pathway is regulated by cysteine availability, enzyme expression, and feedback inhibition by glutathione itself. Liver tissue has a particularly high capacity for synthesis and export. Because the molecule is made inside cells, circulating glutathione reflects a balance of release, uptake, and breakdown rather than simple dietary supply.
Functionally, glutathione supports redox balance by donating electrons and becoming oxidized. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes participate in peroxide reduction and in conjugation reactions that help process reactive molecules. Separate from antioxidant roles, glutathione can modify protein cysteines through S-glutathionylation, influencing enzyme activity and signaling. Research continues to examine how these chemical roles translate into whole-organism effects.

Glutathione supports several cellular processes beyond direct antioxidant action. It serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes, which reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. The molecule also acts as a reservoir of cysteine, an amino acid that can limit protein synthesis and redox signaling. In human nutrition, oral glutathione is sold as a supplement, but how much intact glutathione reaches tissues after ingestion remains an active research question. Clinical claims about supplementation are not uniformly supported by controlled trials.
Glutathione is a small tripeptide built from glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine involves the gamma-carboxyl group rather than the usual alpha-carboxyl group. This structure gives the molecule a reactive thiol on the cysteine residue. The reduced form, often abbreviated GSH, is the predominant intracellular species in many cell types. Because the thiol can donate electrons, glutathione participates in redox chemistry and in the conjugation of reactive molecules.
Cells synthesize glutathione through two ATP-dependent steps: glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine to form the complete tripeptide. Breakdown occurs through gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and subsequent peptidase reactions, forming the gamma-glutamyl cycle. Within cells, glutathione also forms a disulfide-linked dimer called GSSG when two GSH molecules react. The balance between GSH and GSSG is widely used as an indicator of oxidative conditions, although the ratio can vary by compartment and tissue.
Interpreting glutathione measurements requires attention to pre-analytical variables. The GSSG concentration in a sample can rise artificially during storage or processing, making the GSH/GSSG ratio unreliable if not controlled. Reference ranges vary by specimen type, assay, and population, so comparisons across studies are difficult. Plasma glutathione is low and sensitive to hemolysis, while whole blood reflects primarily erythrocyte content. Many studies measure total glutathione rather than the reduced and oxidized forms separately, which limits conclusions about redox status.
Accurate measurement of glutathione begins with careful sample handling. Because GSH oxidizes rapidly to GSSG, samples must be processed quickly or frozen immediately. Acid precipitation with metaphosphoric acid or perchloric acid is common; it lowers pH, precipitates proteins, and helps preserve the reduced form. Chelating agents such as EDTA can limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. For whole blood, hemolysis releases glutathione from erythrocytes, so plasma and serum values differ substantially from whole blood values.

=== Mammography === Molybdenum targets are used in mammography because they produce X-rays in the energy range of 17–20 keV, which is optimal for imaging soft tissues like the breast. The characteristic X-rays emitted from molybdenum provide high contrast between different types of tissues, allowing for the effective visualization of microcalcifications and other subtle abnormalities in breast tissue. This energy range also minimizes radiation dose while maximizing image quality, making molybdenum targets particularly suitable for breast cancer screening.
== Background and publication == A Scanner Darkly was one of the few Dick novels to gestate over a long period of time. By February 1973, in an effort to prove that the effects of his amphetamine usage were merely psychosomatic, the newly clean-and-sober author had already prepared a full outline. A first draft was in development by March. This labor was soon supplanted by a new family and the completion of Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said (left unfinished in 1970), which was finally released in 1974 and received the prestigious John W. Campbell Award. Additional preoccupations were the mystical experiences of early 1974 that eventually served as a basis for VALIS and the Exegesis journal; a screenplay for an unproduced film adaptation of 1969's Ubik; occasional lectures; and the expedited completion of the deferred Roger Zelazny collaboration Deus Irae in 1975. Because of its semi-autobiographical nature, some of A Scanner Darkly was torturous to write. Tessa Dick, Philip's wife at the time, once stated that she often found her husband weeping as the sun rose after a night-long writing session. Tessa has given interviews stating that "when he was with me, he wrote A Scanner Darkly [in] under two weeks. But we spent three years rewriting it" and that she was "pretty involved in his writing process [for A Scanner Darkly]". Tessa stated in a later interview that she "participated in the writing of A Scanner Darkly" and said that she "consider[s] [her]self the silent co-author".

On 10 February 2021, Camille took part in a demonstration near the Élysée with politicians and activists including Matthieu Orphelin, Cécile Duflot, Marie Toussaint and Cyril Dion. See denounced the "lack of courage" from President Emmanuel Macron, who, according to her, "unraveled" the proposals of the Citizens Convention for Climate when drafting the 2021 loi Climat (Climate Law). On 16 June 2021, she announced that, alongside activist Cyril Dion and MEP Pierre Larrouturou, she was filing a complaint against Jean Castex and four other ministers (Bruno Le Maire, Barbara Pompili, Emmanuelle Wargon and Jean-Baptiste Djebbari) for their inaction in the face of climate change. The French State having already been condemned on numerous occasions (most notably by the Affaire du siècle campaign), they argued that taking individual ministers to court would be a more effective action. Camille is also engaged in campaigns against greenhouse gas emissions, in particular the EACOP, the world's largest heated oil pipeline planned in East Africa by TotalEnergies and the Lützerath mining site in Germany, as well as the exploitation of the seabed. In May 2023, she published Pour un soulèvement écologique : dépasser notre impuissance collective (For an Ecological Uprising: Overcoming our Collective Helplessness). In October 2023, she joined the fight against the planned A69 motorway linking Castres (Tarn) to Toulouse.
=== Flow modulation === This is a valve-based approach, where differential flows are used to 'fill' and 'flush' a sample loop. Flow modulation does not suffer from the same volatility restrictions as thermal modulation, as it does not rely on trapping analytes using a cold jet – meaning volatiles <C5 can be efficiently modulated.
== Drug design of Keto-ACE and its ketomethylene derivatives == It was found that other carbonyl-containing groups such as ketones could substitute for the amide bond that links Phe and Gly in ACE inhibitors. Keto-ACE, first described in 1980, has emerged as a potential lead compound for C-domain specific ACE inhibitors. Keto-ACE, a tripeptide analogue of Phe-Gly-Pro, contains a bulky P1 and P2 benzyl ring and was shown to inhibit the hydrolysis of angiotensin I and bradykinin via the C-domain. The synthesis of keto-ACE analogues with Trp or Phe at the P2’ position led to a marked increase in C-domain selectivity, but the introduction of an aliphatic P2 group conferred N-domain selectivity. Inhibitory potency may further be enhanced by the incorporation of hydrophobic substituent, such as phenyl group at the P1’ position. P1’ substituents with S-stereochemistry have also been shown to possess greater inhibitory potency than their R-counterparts. Keto-ACE was used as the basis for the design of ketomethylene derivates. Its analogues contain a ketomethylene isostere replacement at the scissile bond that is believed to mimic the tetrahedron transition state of the proteolytic reaction at the active site. The focus was on a simple tripeptide Phe-Ala-Pro, which in earlier enzyme assays has shown inhibition activity. Replacement of alanine with glycin gave a tripeptide with 1/14th of the inhibition activity of Phe-Ala-Pro. The benzoylated derivative of Phe-Gly-Pro, Bz-Phe-Gly-Pro, was twice as active.
=== Dilution to threshold === A dilution series of a sample or extract is prepared and assessed for presence of odour. The result can be described as the odour potency of a compound. One kind of analysis is to measure the maximum dilution in the series in which odour is still perceived. The resulting value is called the flavour dilution (FD) factor in the aroma extraction dilution analysis (AEDA) developed in 1987 by Schieberle and Grosch. On the other hand, another kind of analysis is to also measure the duration of the perceived odour to compute peak areas. The peak areas are known as Charm values in the CharmAnalysis developed in 1984 by Acree and co-workers. The former can then be interpreted as the peak height of the latter. Because the odour threshold of a compound is intended to be measured from a prepared series of dilution (commonly by a factor of 2–3 with 8–10 dilutions), the precision and variation in data can be determined from the dilution factors used. Due to time demand requirements from this method and the general requirement for multiple assessors to minimise errors, having the column split into multiple odour ports would be beneficial for the method.

=== Transfusion–dependent anemia === People with thalassaemia who are transfusion dependent require a higher hemoglobin threshold to suppress their own red cell production. To do this their hemoglobin levels should not be allowed to drop below 90 to 105 g/L (9 to 10.5 g/dL). There is insufficient evidence to recommend a particular hemoglobin threshold in people with myelodysplasia or aplastic anemia, and guidelines recommend an individualized approach to transfusion.
After his daughter was born, Marrow enlisted in the United States Army in October 1977. Following basic training, Marrow was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division. During his time in the army Marrow was involved with a group of soldiers charged with the theft of a rug. While awaiting trial, he received a $2,500 bonus check and went absent without leave (AWOL), returning a month later, after the rug had been returned. Marrow received a non-judicial punishment as a consequence of his dereliction of duty. During his spell in the Army, Marrow became interested in hip-hop. He heard The Sugarhill Gang's newly released single "Rapper's Delight" (1979), which inspired him to perform his own raps over the instrumentals of this and other early hip-hop records. The music, however, did not fit his lyrics or form of delivery. When he was stationed in Hawaii (where prostitution was not a heavily prosecuted crime) as a squad leader at Schofield Barracks, Marrow met a pimp named Mac. Mac admired that Marrow could quote Iceberg Slim, and he taught Marrow how to be a pimp himself. Marrow was also able to purchase stereo equipment cheaply in Hawaii, including two Technics turntables, a mixer, and large speakers. Once equipped, he then began to learn turntablism and rapping. Marrow learned from his commanding officer that he could receive an early honorable discharge because he was a single father. Taking advantage of this, Marrow was discharged as a Private First Class (PFC - E3) in December 1979 after serving for two years and two months.
==== Heart failure ==== Heart failure can be characterized by a loss of β adrenergic receptor (βAR) signalling in heart cells. When the βAR is stimulated by catecholamines such as adrenaline and noradrenaline, there is normally an increase in the contractility of the heart. However, in heart failure there are sustained and elevated levels of catecholamines which result in chronic desensitization of the βAR receptor. This leads to a decrease in the strength of heart contractions. Some research suggests that this chronic desensitization is due to the over activation of a kinase, G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2 (GRK2), which phosphorylates and deactivates certain G protein coupled receptors . When the G protein coupled receptor is activated, the Gβγ subunit recruits GRK2 which then phosphorylates and desensitizes GPCRs like the βAR. Preventing the interaction of the βγ subunit with GRK2 has therefore been studied as a potential target for increasing heart contractile function. The developed molecule GRK2ct is a protein inhibitor which inhibits the signalling properties of Gβγ subunit but does not interfere with alpha subunit signalling. The over expression of GRK2ct has been shown to significantly rescue cardiac function in murine models of heart failure by blocking Gβγ subunit signalling. In another study, biopsies were taken from patients with heart failure and virally induced overexpression of GRK2ct in the heart myocytes. Other tests showed an improvement in cardiac cell contractile function by inhibiting Gβγ.
glycol Any of a class of aliphatic dihydric alcohols in which the two hydroxy groups are bonded to two different carbon atoms, which are usually but not necessarily adjacent to each other; e.g. ethylene glycol (HOCH2CH2OH).
The president is the commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces and appoints its leaders, the secretary of defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Department of Defense, headquartered at the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., administers five of the six service branches, which are made up of the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force. The Coast Guard is administered by the Department of Homeland Security in peacetime and can be transferred to the Department of the Navy in wartime. Total strength of the entire military is about 1.3 million active duty with an additional 400,000 in reserve. The United States military is widely regarded as the most powerful and advanced in the world. The U.S. spent $954 billion on its military in 2025, which is by far the largest amount of any country, making up 33% of global military spending and accounting for 3.1% of the country's GDP. The U.S. possesses 42% of the world's nuclear weapons—the second-largest stockpile after that of Russia. The United States has the third-largest combined armed forces in the world, behind the Chinese People's Liberation Army and Indian Armed Forces. In addition to the vast network of military bases on its soil, the U.S. maintains approximately 800 other bases and installations around the world, and it deploys greater than 100 active-duty personnel in each of 25 foreign countries. The United States has engaged in over 400 military interventions since its founding in 1776, with over half of these occurring between 1950 and 2019 and 25% occurring in the post–Cold War era.
